- Hi Folks,
-
- Finally ran across some more nice stuff that will work with Amiga..
-
- 1) Sony 128mb Magneto Optical drives.. Model SMO-P301-00
- They have standard SCSI interface, and work well on Amiga.
- They are supposedly 128mb but show about 121mb after format.
-
- The drives are 3.5" wide by 1 9/16 inches tall.. They are a bit tall for
- an amiga 3.5" floppy drive bay, and the eject button is in the wrong
- place, but work out OK in a 5.25 inch bay.. You'll have to make some
- little custom mount stuff and plastic.. I have one in the top bay on my
- Amiga 3000T-040..
-
- These are really nice for back-up, especially on the Amiga.. You can set
- up a cartridge as a "Sys:" disk with a high boot priority.. put in all
- your favorite stuff, aliases shells etc., along with all your back-up
- programs and utilities.. This way if your drive crashes, you can boot off
- the cartridge and have a complete and full system to play around with
- while trying to rescue your dead drive.. HD toolbox just sees them as
- another hard drive.. no problems at all..
-
- Speed is about 460KBytes/sec on sysinfo.. about the same speed it shows
- for 4speed CDRom drives..
-
- The 128s are priced at $175 each including FedEx shipping
- (Continental U.S. ONLY) (5 of these available)
-
- 2) Sony 600mb Magneto Optical drives.. Model SMO-C501-00E
- They have standard SCSI interface, and work well on Amiga.
- They are supposedly 600mb but show about 281mb Per-Side after format.
- These are 5.25 inch FULL hight drives (about 3 3/8th inches tall)
-
- These drives are just a bit slower than the little 128s.. Sysinfo shows
- the transfer rate on these to be just over 400KBytes/sec..
- I didn't use LateScsiMount to make a little mount deal for these, but
- I imagine they would work the same way as the 128s if you wanted to do so..
-
- The 600s are priced at $325 each including FedEx shipping
- (Continental U.S. ONLY) (3 of these available)
-
- MagOpt is real nice, because the media is about as dependable as you can
- get. You can have magnetic screwdrivers around and not trash your data.
- They can also take much more physical abuse than things like zip-drives
- syquest, and other magnetic-media cartridge type drives.. Although they
- are noticeably slower..
-
- Because I am using on of the 128s myself, I played with it a bit..
-
- Initially the Amiga would only find the drive if there was something in
- it on boot.. I found this a bit irritating. So I found some program called
- LateScsiMount.. A very nice little program.. It Came with a utility called
- GenML (for Generate MountList) I used GenML to make a little mount list,
- and put this in the DosDrivers drawer, but it didn't seem to make any
- difference..
-
- I then noticed that some stuff that came with Emplant to make a "MAC" mount
- entries for the emplant, would also make a mountlist, and a .info file to
- go with it.. If I had this in the DosDrivers drawer, and put a disk in
- the MO, an icon showed up on the WB.. So I took the ".info" file made
- by the Emplant program, and then attached it to the Mountlist from the
- GenML utility. This combo seems to make an entry you can simply drop into
- the "Devs:DosDrivers" drawer.. Works real nice.. you can boot the machine
- with no disk in the MO, then put one in and it shows up on WB, you can
- also change disks just like a floppy each new disk shows it's own icon..
- This seems to cause no problems if there is a disk in the drive on boot,
- but if you call name the Icon "Sony", and LowLevel format the cartridge
- as "SM0", you can end up with info showing the same disk under both of
- these names..
-
- I don't know how this would work with different size partitions etc, but
- it works real well if you make the disk just one partition.. I will include
- a copy of this MountList and .info file with the drives.. This way you can
- get them up-and running in a nice fashion, with minimal fuss.. If you want
- on of the 600ms (281mb each side after format) I'll make a little 281mb set
- up for this as well..
-
- Cartridges are about $25each for the 128mb 3.5inch
- and about $80 each for the 600mb 5.25 inch kind..
